Chiropractic Adjustment vs. "Touch-Move-Renew" for Low Back Pain

Are you dealing with low back pain?! If so, you are certainly not alone. In fact, it is estimated that nearly 85% of adults have low back pain at some time in their lives. Not so good of odds here...

If you are part of the 15% who escape the not so fun experience of low back pain, kudus to you. For the rest of us, you know how all you can think about when dealing with low back pain is how to get it to stop! At Thrive HQ, we get asked on an almost daily basis by clients, "can you help me with me low back pain or do I need to see a chiropractor?" We love getting this question because it gives us an opportunity to explain and spread the word about what we can do as physical therapists, but more so to explain our proven "Touch-Move-Renew" process at Thrive HQ and why it is superior to a chiropractic adjustment alone.

As physical therapists we CAN perform what are known as spinal manipulations. These are techniques where we use a high velocity thrust directed to specific levels of the spine to address and alleviate pain in the short term. The techniques are often identical to what you see a chiropractor doing during a "chiropractic adjustment." Although as physical therapists we believe we are accomplishing the reduced pain through a different physiological means than chiropractors, we are often performing the exact same techniques. One picture below is a chiropractor setting up for a lumbar adjustment where the other is a physical therapist setting up for a lumbar manipulation. Other than some slight differences in hand placement (which is actually just two different techniques used by both professions), there isn't much different...

Unfortunately the physical therapy profession has done a poor job of marketing and educating the public that we have these techniques "in our toolbox" and can use them to create rapid pain relief. Again, this is why we love the question, as we are not shy to spread the word!!

So what the heck is "Touch-Move-Renew"?

The "Touch-Move-Renew" process is our "secret sauce" at Thrive HQ. It sets the framework for the holistic approach to physical therapy we use with every client we get the opportunity to work with. It combines manual therapy like spinal manipulations along with exercise and self-care. This process can help clients achieve long-term results by addressing the root cause of the condition and empowering them to take an active role in their recovery.

The "Touch" phase of the process involves manual therapy, which can include techniques such as joint manipulations, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, stretching, and joint mobilizations. Manual therapy can help reduce pain and improve joint mobility by releasing tension and improving blood flow to the affected area. It can also help restore proper alignment and improve the functioning of the musculoskeletal system.

The "Move" phase of the process involves exercise, which can help patients build strength, flexibility, and endurance. Exercise can also help address underlying issues that contribute to the condition or injury, such as poor posture or weak muscles. By engaging in exercises that target these underlying issues, patients can address the root cause of their condition and improve their overall health.

The "Renew" phase of the process involves self-care, which can include techniques such as meditation, yoga, and mindfulness. Self-care can help reduce stress, promote relaxation, and improve overall well-being. By incorporating self-care into their daily routine, patients can support their recovery and maintain their physical and mental health.

Address the pain! But don't stop there...

Look, we understand. If you are in pain, you could care less about what cool new exercise you could do to strengthen your core... You just want pain relief and you want it as quickly as possible before you can even start thinking about more exercises. This is why it is ESSENTIAL to receive a physical therapy manipulation (If you run into a physical therapist who says they don't do any hands on treatment, get out of there ASAP and find a new physical therapist!) or chiropractic adjustment; but we urge you to NOT STOP THERE! By combining spinal manipulation for the low back with corrective exercises, and self-care, the "Touch-Move-Renew" process can help patients achieve long-term results and improve their overall health and well-being that simply CANNOT be achieved by a chiropractic adjustment alone. Our holistic Touch-Move-Renew approach helps patients take an active role in their recovery and achieve the best possible outcomes. Look, we love working with you, but ultimately we want you to have the tools to take control of your health!
